CZ.Turk.1 - 10 Days Turkana Truck via Sweet waters / Samburu Marsabit / Chalbi Desert / Lake Baringo Departs every Wednesday

This rugged 1,800-km expedition is run in land cruiser or Landrover, as trucks are not allowed into the Sweetwaters Private Game Ranch. This means a maximum group size of 10. It takes you up into the heart of the Northern Frontier District via the Sweetwaters and Samburu Game Reserve. You will traverse along some of Africa’s worst roads, see beautiful mountain forest surrounded on all sides by hot dusty deserts, eventually arriving at our camp on the shores of the Jade Sea (Lake Turkana).

Ours is the only camp situated right on the beach of the lake with spectacular views of the South Island. The camp comprises 12 double traditional Turkana palm leaf huts, a dinning/lounge, kitchen, showers and toilets. Our 20-seat boat is based here and is available for sunset cruises and our visit to Elmoro Bay some 12 kms to the north. You will see a great variety of tribes during the tour and cross the Chalbi Desert if dry. During the rains it becomes an enormous shallow lake. At Tuum you will spend sometime camel walking with Samburu local guides on the foothills of Mt.Nyiro
Day 1 – Mt. Kenya:
Depart Nairobi in the morning and proceed to Mt Kenya region. Afternoon gamedrive at Sweetwaters game ranch to see the wildlife including chimps. This private ranch is the only sanctuary for rehabilitation in Kenya of these widely abused primates with two groups living in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible. It is something interesting to see besides rhino, lion and other attractions. We spend night at Mountain Rock Campsite.
Day 2 – Samburu:
Depart in the morning for Samburu game reserve to arrive there in time for the afternoon gamedrive in the park. Elephants abound; you may see lion, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, grevy’s zebra and oryx. Dinner and overnight in our semi-permanent campsite beautifully set under a canopy of trees or pitch tents on the edge of Uaso Nyiro River.
Day 3 – Marsabit:
We head north again along the African highway to Marsabit, which is an extinct volcano heavily forested on its upper slopes. After setting up camp, we will visit the lodge inside the National Park if not too wet. You may see elephant, buffalo and kudu as the lodge is situated on the edge of a water-filled crater. As long as the park is dry we drive through thick forest to the famous Lake Paradise. There are some very steep hills which are impassable if wet.
Day 4 – Kalacha:
We visit Marsabit town and another volcanic crater before making our way back into the desert and lava flows. We camp at Kalacha, a small settlement on the edge of the Chalbi Desert.
Day 5 - Lake Turkana:
We depart early crossing the Chalbi Desert. The desert cannot be crossed if wet but there are alternative roads around the North and South. We arrive at our semi-permanent beach campsite just outside Loiyangalani soon after lunch. Here we have traditional Turkana Huts or pitch tents with a cool breeze blowing from the lake for use if available otherwise we pitch tents in an alternative campsite. Indeed a perfect place to relax protected from the scorching sun and heat characteristic of the harsh climate of this remote area.
Day 6 - Lake Turkana:
We spend the day relaxing and bathing only interrupted by a short boat excursion to visit the surrounding areas. In addition, we visit Loiyangalani and the community settled there while in the evening we may visit one of the Turkana Manyattas for traditional dances under a star studded sky at an extra cost if clients wish. Unforgettable experience.
Day 7- Tuum camel safari
Departing Lake Turkana via the very rocky road out of the Rift Valley we head south to Tuum, situated on the west of Mt. Nyiro. This is a very scenic but rough drive. From Tuum You have the chance to walk with camels and Samburu guides for a couple of hours to the foothills of Mt. Nyiro where you will fly camp together with the guides and camels.
Day 8 – Maralal
Early morning walk for a couple of hours to meet with your driver guide and vehicle then continue on the rough journey to Maralal for Dinner and overnight.
Day 9 – Lake Baringo:
Heading south we visit Lake Baringo where we overnight in a campsite and enjoy the lake atmosphere with birds, crocodiles and hippos.
Day 10 – Nairobi:
Have early morning boat ride. After Breakfast drive back to Nairobi late afternoon. Heading south again via Laikipia Plains and Thompson Falls (Nyahururu) we drive back into Nairobi by mid-afternoon.

The total phase of a solar eclipse is very brief. It rarely lasts more than several minutes. Nevertheless, it is considered to be one of the most awe inspiring spectacles in all of nature. The sky takes on an eerie twilight as the Sun's bright face is replaced by the black disk of the Moon. Surrounding the Moon is a beautiful gossamer halo. This is the Sun's spectacular solar corona; a super heated plasma two million degrees in temperature. The corona can only be seen during the few brief minutes of totality.
To witness such an event is a singularly memorable experience which cannot be conveyed adequately through words or photographs. To witness a total solar eclipse is an unforgettable experience—and combined with this unique safari tourching the most beautiful parks of Kenya and the rich culture of pokot , samburu and finally the turkana people, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime travel adventure!
Our journey offers among the best weather prospects on the entire eclipse path and the most visible totality area even though lasting for only 14 seconds, safaris to the west side of Lake Turkana covering Lake Nakuru National Park, Lerochi Plateau, Great Rift Valley, Masai Mara Game Reserve and Lake turkana eclipse observation point.

More safaris to the west side of Lake Turkana.

The Mara reserve is 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers. One glimpse is enough to explain its appeal; it is typical savannah, with a mass of amazing wildlife.
Arrival day 26th of October

Day 1 – Nairobi– Masai Mara 27th of October
Heading further south towards Narok, we camp at our semi-permanent Talek riverside campsite situated at the edge of the park (next to Talek gate). Here we pitch up tents on the camp grounds or use the small wood cabins if not already occupied. Hot showers and toilets are available in the camp and meals are served in the dinning area.

On clear days, the Mara offers fantastic orange tinted sunsets and you will definitely want to capture this moment while sipping on a sundowner back at our campsite. The Mara reserve is 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers. One glimpse is enough to explain its appeal; it is typical savannah, with a mass of amazing wildlife.
Dinner and over night at the Masai mara sopa lodge, Mara sarova lodge, Simba lodge or Keekorock lodge.

Day 2– Masai Mara 29th of October
The day is spent exploring the Mara magic. Wherever you go in the Mara you will see a frequent amount of wildlife such as Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in great numbers. It is common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal, or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but are still reasonably common.

The ultimate action here is without doubt the annual wildebeest exodus in July and August when millions of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.
Balloon trips are an entirely outstanding way of seeing the savannah plains and the wildlife after which you come back down for a beautiful champagne breakfast. These trips can be arranged at our office upon booking. Dinner and over night at the Masai mara sopa lodge, Mara sarova lodge, Simba lodge or Keekorock lodge.

Day 3– Masai Mara- Lake Nakuru 30th of October
we leave soon after breakfast for Lake Nakuru national park. This small park (180 sq km) is home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbucks, and the occasional leopard.  White and black rhinos were introduced to the park some years ago and you will find white rhino at the southern end.  The park has also retained its reputation as an ornithologists’ delight with more than 400 species of bird found here.  We spend the night at Sarova lion hill or lake Nakuru lodge.

This pleasant park was created to ensure the preservation of the Sitatunga antelope. Dinner and over night in kitale in the best accomodation possible.
